Case study

Electrician, Chantelle

Chantelle, Electrician
Wakefield Metropolitan District Council

I've been working for the council as an electrician for five years. I originally applied for the job after seeing the advert in the local paper, as I thought it would be a good career to get into. The essential qualifications I needed for the job were 5 GCSEs including English, maths and science.

My main responsibilities include pricing up jobs, ordering equipment, working on site and signing off completed jobs. Sometimes it is challenging trying to get the work completed within a set target time and to the highest standard you can achieve, but I really like the variety of the work and seeing a job progress. It's great seeing the end results of your work, especially on some of the larger new build jobs.

I've received a lot of training in my time at the council, I've done several electricians' qualifications including Installing and Commissioning Electronic Systems NVQ level 3. In future I want to continue gaining more qualifications linked to my trade.
